Enroll in College Today!
If you are a boomer or better, enroll in college today. In California, voters recently approved legislation to provide stronger programming than we’ve seen in years. Nationwide, the labor market is appearing more vibrant with each new jobs report, necessitating employment of skilled workers in a variety of sectors, but especially in technology and health care (http://money.usnews.com/careers/best-jobs/rankings/the-100-best-jobs).
If employment is not your goal, go to school anyway, as we know that engaging our minds is a significant variable in staving off the memory loss. Options in higher education abound and include formal courses conducted through universities, community colleges and adult schools; informal instruction via senior centers and recreation programs; and online learning opportunities offered through a myriad of educational institutions. Examples include the Carnegie Melon Open Learning Initiative (http://oli.cmu.edu/) and the MIT Open Courseware Program (http://ocw.mit.edu/about/). Think about it. You can tell your grandkids that you’re studying through MIT!
Finally, we know that adults who return to college realize not only mental stimulation and the potential for enhanced employment options, they also enjoy the camaraderie among other students and faculty, whether in a brick and mortar or virtual classroom. Instructors enjoy having older adults in their classes bringing life experience and diverse perspectives into the learning experience.
It’s a great time to be a boomer. Enroll in college today!
