Is Your Life Sufficient in Retirement? Video
I was first introduced to the concept of sufficiency while reading The Soul of Money, by Lynne Twist. According to Lynne Sufficiency is a “consciousness, an intentional choosing of the way we think of our circumstances.” Lynne continues, “Money is a way that expresses value, not determines it.” Sufficiency, unlike frugality isn’t about cutting back or lowering expectations. Rather it is a internal knowledge to ourselves of the presence of our inner resource. “Sufficiency is a context we bring forth from within that reminds us that if we look around and within ourselves, we will find what we need.
I first encountered the concept of sufficiency versus poverty in the Sahara Desert. We were on a tour with Overseas Adventure Travel in Morocco. We spend 4 nights in the desert and one of our events was to have tea with a Berber family. They camel herders, living the way their people had lived for thousands of years. While they have very limited material wealth, since they were nomads, they were not poor in mind or spirit. They lived a sufficient life.
The king of Morocco thought it wise to move the Berber into villages so the children could be educated. We visited these villages where the way life had been taken away from the people. They could no longer herd camels, goats or sheep, so there were only limited ways of earning money. The eyes of the children were vacant. They were poor.
